If you are looking for model railroad track plans, there are many different resources to choose from, depending on the scale of your train. There are even track layout designs for larger, fully functioning models, those in the 1/4th to 1/8th scale sizes.

While many regular hobbyists have a hard time wrapping their mind around these large scales, there are many land and homeowner’s who buy this size, more than you think. There are many different track layouts for large working train scales, it really depends on what your property is like.

The larger the land available, the greater the number of layout ideas. You could have a train pick up guests at the front of your property, load all their luggage and off you all go!

You can show them at leisure the many things you have added to you land, that barn and corral for your horses or other livestock. You could show them your garden plot as you go by, and finally end up at your house.

You can use these scales to transport materials, and products around your property as well, sometimes even more cost effectively than using 4-wheelers, or small tractors. If that size is just too much for you, no worries.

There are also large scales like O and G that are large enough to fit well in many outdoor settings. There are also many layouts offered for this scale, garden layouts, and even highly detailed landscaping.

Some pictures available depict trains going around outdoor layouts, with models of Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, or even some mountainous settings. For anyone who enjoys the versatility of this scale, the layouts are only limited to their imaginings.

HO Scale model trains are one of the most common scales used by train hobbyists. The layouts and plans for these are so numerous that it would take weeks to look at just the tip of the iceberg.

These too, have many accessory sets, whether you are looking for buildings, scenery, vehicles or figures, you won’t have any trouble finding what you are looking for, or run out of lay out designs for tracks and scapes. Whether you want a city landscape, a mountainous setting with lots of trestles and switchbacks, or something in between, you can find it.

You can look at the many illustrations found online, but these won’t really give you any kind of details, other than what you can see. Many train enthusiasts use layout design books. These come with complete instructions for each layout, plus detailed diagrams of each.

Plus, you have supply lists right there so you will know exactly what you need to build a layout. Layout books can be found online, in some hobby stores, and even at your local libraries.

If you decide to buy one, you don’t have to worry about having to return it, and risking the possibility of it not being available. You can just put it away until it is needed again.

When choosing a layout, you will need a strong base, or benchwork as it’s called in the field. There are many prefabricated modular units, ones that lock into place, that come apart easily if you need to move them.

The only real drawback to these is you have to be more careful where you put the layout, so that the break won’t be in the middle of the track, or landscaping idea.

Model railroad track plans can vary depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Track plans can be very simple, or they can be very complicated depending on the layout you are building. The majority of track plans start out as just a basic oval and will eventually morph into something more elaborate as the model railroader’s skill level increases. The right planning will allow you to design a track and layout that you can be proud of. It does not take a lot of money, or space to create an effective layout as long as you dedicate the right amount of time to plan out exactly what you would like your layout to look like.

The first thing you will want to decide on is if you are looking to create a landscape or a cityscape with your layout. Your model railroad track plans will depend mostly on the environment you are looking to have your model train travel through. The first thing you will want to do is go to model train clubs in order to get different ideas for how your finished product should look like. You can also go online to look at different train tracks, which exist in reality to try and recreate the effect in your layout. Pay attention to the trees and the buildings you see in order to get an idea of what products you will have to buy. This will help you create a budget you can stick to.

Determining the amount of space you have will help you in creating the right model railroad track plans. By scaling down the plans into the space you have, you can decide what size train you will be able to use for the layout. If you already have a train and it is too big for the layout you have in mind, you may want to consider altering the plan to include only part of the scene you have in mind. You can then have the train go through a tunnel which will loop back through the background of the scene in order to start again at the beginning.

Before permanently affixing your track and layout in place, you may want to try a mock up to see how the plan looks when all laid out. This will give you a chance to make any last minute changes before you commit to anything you will not be able to change very easily. You can lay it out with cardboard and tack the train into place while simply placing buildings and other landscape features where you have them planned. You can then see a real life representation of how the finished product will look.

Once you have decided you have the right model railroad track plans, you can set to laying the Styrofoam base for your layout. You can do this on its own, on a tabletop, or on a door resting between two work benches. The best part about using this kind of base is it allows you to easily move your layout from one place to another should you feel it necessary. Many who belong to model railroad clubs will do this in order to bring their layout to meetings or conventions.
