I haven’t seen the latest stats but HO is the most common and by a large percentage. Which is better is up to the individual and how they want to operate. If you want to build a layout and have lots of switching operations, HO might be better for you. If you want to run 50-100 car mainline type trains and don’t live in a basketball gym then N scale is the better choice. I’ve done both at they both have their advantages and disadvantages. I’m currently doing N scale because of space restrictions. It takes about half the space of HO. Or looking at it another way you can half twice the N scale layout in the same space as an HO layout. Price wise both scales are comparable. HO items are more plentiful and many toy items like Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars can be used on layouts. If there is some sort of engine that you must have it’s probably made in HO. N scale does not offer as many steam engines as HO does although that is getting better. Some Micro Machines cars and trucks scale out to N scale. Hope this was of some help to you.
